New mobile phones under the MTS

Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has begun selling mobile phones under the MTS brand, the company said in a statement.

The company plans to debut three new mobile phone models this fall.

The first model, the MTS 236, was specially designed by China's ZTE Corporation for Vodafone and is being sold under the MTS brand as part of a strategic partnership between the two operators, the statement says.

The minimum price for the MTS 236 is 890 rubles.

MTS already has experience selling phones under its own brand. In 2005, the company sold about 100,000 low-cost GSM telephones under the MTS brand in Russia and Ukraine that were produced by Sitronics (RTS: SITR), the hi-tech arm of Russia's Sistema (RTS: AFKS) holding. The project, however, was discontinued because consumers were purchasing more expensive phones at the time.

Russia's other two major mobile operators, VimpelCom (RTS: VIMP) and MegaFon (RTS: MEGF), also sell phones under their own brands. MegaFon began selling the low-cost Huawei model with a cost of about 1,000 rubles in Moscow in late 2008. VimpelCom started selling phones for 3G networks under its own brand last year as part of cooperation with Huawei for sales in the Far East, where the operator has the majority of its 3G licenses. The phone has a price tag of about 4,000 rubles.

MTS is Russia's largest mobile operator. Its main shareholder is Sistema.

MTS is also developing its own retail chain. The operator has a chain of about 3,000 stores, including its own MTS stores, retailers it acquired ( and Eldorado) and franchised stores.
