Russia is prepared to participate in creation of a consortium to manage the Ukrainian gas transport system together with Ukraine and the European Union.
Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced this at the end of a meeting with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. "Regarding the consortium our attitude to it is positive," Putin said. According to him, Russia will be able to make a final decision on its participation in this project only after studying concrete proposals.

Putin also stressed that creation of the consortium would not involve alienation of the Ukrainian gas transport system. "Nobody is planning to buy out, take over the gas transport system. According to our proposal, it should remain the property of the Ukrainian government," Putin said.

President Viktor Yanukovych said in early March that Ukraine intended to seek access to gas deposits in Russia during creation of a consortium to manage the Ukrainian gas transport system.
