Ukraine is ready to discuss with Russia the modernization of the Ukrainian gas transport system, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said at a meeting with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov on Thursday.
He noted that the Ukrainian GTS was currently capable of transporting about 150 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe each year, and if it were modernized, its annual capacity could be increased to over 200 billion cubic meters of gas. Azarov said that Ukraine had also submitted a respective proposal to European countries.

The prime minister noted that significantly less funds were required for the modernization of the Ukrainian gas transport system, rather than on the construction of the Nord Stream and South Stream gas pipelines.

Azarov stressed the need to develop cooperation with Russia in the nuclear, aerospace and aircraft engineering sectors, adding that the problems in relations between the two states had arisen due to an insufficiently intensified dialogue, which he said should be currently stepped up.
